We do made to order beckets. Beckets are handles for sea chests, but their creative application can go as far as your imagination. The beckets are typically sold in pairs, but we can do one for half the price if you want. The becket is made with a rope core that is covered in canvas or wrapped in twine and finished off with decorative covering. Although it is only constructed from rope and twine, a becket is very sturdy.
Our beckets are unpainted, though most people paint theirs. But leaving them unpainted gives you the option to either paint them yourself or enjoy the detail of the knot work and resulting patterns.
– The typical dimension are about 5 inches wide and 10 inches long, but we can make them to whatever size you specify. Smaller beckets will be less expensive and larger beckets will be more expensive. $500.00 is the price of a standard pair. The diameter of the beckets is typically around 1 inch.
Colors and Patterns:
-If you have particular colors or patterns in mind, you can let us know and we will tell you if we are capable of executing those ideas. The main colors we can do are white, natural, and black.
– All materials are all natural except the black twine. So if you want all natural beckets we unfortunately cannot do them in black at this time.
– Orders should take about 1-2 weeks depending on the time of year.
More About the Tradition:
Traditional sailors typically made their own sea chests, primarily out of rough pine. These chests housed all of their possessions aboard ship. The beckets which adorned the sea chests often represented the culmination of a sailor’s rope work skills.
But beckets could range from simple, round grommets(an unlaid piece of rope back twisted back on itself to make a circle) to an elaborate piece of art. The beckets might be adorned with a form of hitching, coxcombing, or swordmatting. These were also traditional ways of covering stanchions and rope.
