About the Tradition:
Heaving lines were long pieces of small diameter rope with a monkey’s fist knot on one end. They were used to send the dock lines of a ship onto shore. Traditionally, the Monkey’s Fist knot was tied around a piece of lead, but floatable cores such as cork and wood have also been used. Thus tied, the knot was perfect for throwing, helping the heaving line to be thrown far and accurately.
