This Monkey’s Fist keychain has a glass marble as its core and is tied with all-natural cotton twine. It features the Monkey’s Fist knot, a traditional sailor’s knot which was commonly used on board ships to make heaving lines. Heaving lines were long pieces of small diameter rope with a monkey’s fist knot on one end. They were attached to mooring lines and then thrown onto shore.
Traditionally, the Monkey’s Fist knot was tied around a piece of lead, but cores which float, such as cork and wood, have also been used. The knot was perfect for throwing, helping the heaving line to be thrown far and accurately. Once the heaving line made it to shore, they were used to pull the heavier, hard to throw mooring lines unto shore as well. Own your piece of this history today.
