These coasters were made by hand by modern day tall ship sailors employing the traditional techniques of historical sailors. Each coaster is a single piece of cotton rope woven into a Flat Turk’s Head knot, making a miniature version of a very traditional mat used by sailors.
Historically, sailors would make these mats out of old line from the ship’s rigging and place the mats around the ship as protection from wear. Mats like these, woven into the Flat Turk’s Head, were known as “thump pads” and were generally placed where rigging blocks would regularly hit the ship’s deck.
These mini mat coasters have been glued to natural cork bottoms and flattened for best use and durability. Hope you enjoy your piece of maritime history!
