This bracelet is made up of a Turk’s Head knot, an iconic knot in maritime tradition which could be found many places on a ship from up in the rigging to on tool handles. Perhaps one of the most well-known places to find a Turk’s Head knot on a ship was on a spoke of the ship’s wheel called the “king” spoke, which is the spoke at the top of the wheel when the rudder is straight. The Turk’s head was such an iconic knot that some deckhands would get it tattooed around their wrists or ankles to signify their status as a deckhand.
But in a use most well known of all, sailors at sea reportedly made the Turk’s Head knot into bracelets for both themselves and their loved ones left at home. Thus this bracelet is now known as “The Sailor Bracelet”. To wear your bracelet, simply slip it on to your wrist and, if desired, wet it and the cotton will shrink to your wrist size. Hope you enjoy your iconic piece of sailor history!
– The standard width is around 1 inches.
– The circumference of the bracelet will shrink to your wrist size when wet. However, it needs to slip onto your wrist, so please include the circumference you would need to slip over your hand and unto your wrist and we will make sure you get a bracelet of that size.
As an additional feature, our bracelets are expertly completed with a splice rather than a knot, allowing for a smooth finish.
